Outreach Update! whirlwind missions

Hello, my friends!

As Jesse and I arrived at Azalea, my car was met with the usual crow of children clamoring to be heard.

“Mr. Tim, Mr. Tim!”

“Hello, kids!” I reach into the back seat and pull out a big plastic container. he children know what this means! Donuts! Every month they help us label the envelopes that carried this letter to your door.  they enjoyed doing the “stickers” and I always give them a treat for their hard work.

“OK, kids! Let’s do he name labels!”

The children take their seats and immediately start yelling.

“I need some Mr. Tim! I need ore Mr. Tim!”

I hand each child a little stack of envelopes and a row of name labels. “Put these in the middle.” I carefully put a label on the envelope and show them the example. “That’s easy, Mr. Tim!”

We all sit down at the tables and begin o work. Fahim, one of the kids from Bangledesh is new to the mission.

“What are these for, Mr. Tim?” His chubby, little brown face smiles at me.

“Well Fahim. Every month, we send a letter to our friends who support we’re doing here at the mission.”

“Support?” Hid English isn’t very strong yet, since he’s new in the country.

“That means they help us. They send us money so we can help you guys. See theses table and chairs?”

“Yes.” He nods thoughfully.

“These sweet folks sent their money so we could pay for them. Remember when it was so cold?”

“Oh yeah.” He made shivering motions.

“If it wan’t it wasn’t for their help we wouldn’t have any heat. Remember when we gave you those school supplies and back packs?”

“Yes!” He looked at his bag.

“The people we’re writing to gave you so you would have what you needed for school.”

He looked at me intently.

“What happens if they don’t give?” He seemed quite concerned.

“Well, I rekon our lives would get harder.”Mr. Tim.”

“Thank YOU From Fahim, my friends!”

Duck Head for Dinner?

Duck Heads in Asian Market

Doug McBee, Michiko Lunsford and Bruce Mewbourne hung out with Tim Cummins, Whirlwind Missions, Thursday, April 9. Had a blast! Tim is, well, a whirlwind! He showed us some ministry sites in the Doraville area and talked about how Eagle’s Landing might reach out to people living in Henry County. Good stuff! Tim had a couple of missions teams in from out of state, working in some of the communities.

We enjoyed having lunch with Tim and his son, Jesse, at one of their favorite Mexican restaurants. Tim and Jesse then took us on a quick “safari” and visited in a Hispanic grocery store and the Asian Market. You have to get up there and try a coconut bun!

Never a dull moment with Tim!

Check out some of the pics from the day here and here.

“It Really Makes Me Sad.”

Tim Cummins

Tim Cummins, of Whirlwind Missions, visited Eagle’s Landing March 28.  That was the Sunday we had over 20 people baptized, many of which were middle schoolers.  Awesome!  Tim told me that, while it was fantastic, it was sad for him at the same time. He explained, “I saw those youth being baptized and it made me think of my kids. Many of the kids that I work with are from Muslim or Hindu backgrounds. Baptism for them is like drawing a line in the sand. They would bring shame upon their family if they were to be baptized.” He was sad because of the consequences that the kids he works with would face for being serious about their faith in Christ. Tim’s heart was breaking for these kids.

Tim works in the “International Village” in northeast Atlanta – in the Chamblee, Doraville area. Amazingly, Atlanta is one, if not the most ethnically diverse cities in the world – home to around 761 different language groups! We know of no other city like it! And Tim lives in it, works in it and extends God’s Kingdom in it! We get to partner with him, too!  XAO (our college and young singles group) will be working in one of Tim’s neighborhoods in Clarkston toward the end of April.

So, what to do?  Pray. Pray for the kids and their families that Tim and his workers engage with the Gospel on a daily basis. Pray that God would break through the barriers that exist that would keep people from knowing God in a personal way through Jesus Christ. Ask the Lord to show you what He would have you do in response.

Whirlwind Missions

Whirlwind Missions is dedicated to “taking the church, to the people”. This is based on developing one-on-one relationships with volunteers from evangelistic churches and secular organizations around America and individuals living in apartment complexes and neighborhoods.  Emphasis is given to hands on missions experience in the local community.

These relationships are built through:

  • establishing after-school programs for children
  • providing English as a Second Language classes for immigrants
  • community “missions” projects located directly in apartment complexes and neighborhoods
  • establishing Bible study groups which disciple believers and win converts
  • establishing summer programs providing “Backyard Bible Clubs” and Evangelistic Sports Ministries within apartment complexes and neighborhoods with teams from around America
  • establishing volunteer medical teams to provide services through the missions and outreach events
  • establishing computer literacy and typing classes

The Vision of Whirlwind is to “Reach the lost with the Gospel of Jesus Christ by meeting real needs in the community through developing relationships with people living in the community.”
