NEWS FROM HONDURAS GO TEAM!

So far this week has been perfect.  Everybody is doing there part and today several people’s eternity was changed when they accepted Christ. It was awesome.  The church down here is so thankful for us being here and they are blown away by the keyboard that was donated, almost to tears.

Serving With True Worship Christian Fellowship

We are excited to serve alongside this faith family!

Pastor Clifton (Clif) Dawkins leads True Worship to serve a meal to people living on the streets of Atlanta every Saturday.

Here are some notes to help us help them:

  • Park in the large parking lot where we will be serving.  Feel free to pay for the parking though it is not expected due to what we are doing.  Paying is a good way for us to help True Worship as they continue to use this lot.
  • If you are taking children, please watch them closely – this is a tough neighborhood in downtown Atlanta!
  • Talk with your children, whatever their age.  Help them to be sensitive and compassionate as they serve the hurting and homeless – they will follow your lead.
  • As the people form a line to receive the meal and anything else that will be given, engage them in conversation. This is the best time as many will leave once they have received their meal.  Ask to hear their story or ask how they are doing – be ready to listen and encourage. Your words will have power, so make the most of these encounters. We want them to know that what they are receiving is absolutely free and is given without any “strings attached”, and that our service is meant to show them God’s love and kindness.  Your actions will show this as well as the words you use.
  • Ask how you might pray for them – then pray with them.
  • Remember, these are real people with real feelings.  The words you use will encourage or discourage – introduce yourself by name and ask them theirs.  Do not refer to them as “the homeless”.
  • It is very possible that you will be asked for money – the best practice is to politely decline.
  • If there is a situation that you feel is getting out of hand, seek out Pastor Clif, one of his leaders or an Eagle’s Landing leader.  We don’t anticipate this will happen.
  • Be very careful if you bring a camera.  Ask permission before taking a picture.  In fact, it would be best not to take any. Any pictures taken must be done so sensitively and with discretion.
  • Remember that we are assisting True Worship.  What we do will help them or hurt them as they minister weekly.  Let’s make sure we HELP them.

Thank you for serving!

Praying for Lebanon

This is a critical week for Lebanon as the Lebanese President General Michel Suleiman leads consultations with parliamentary groups re the appointment of a new Sunni prime minister. Yesterday night, and at the end of the first of a two-day mandatory consultations, the streets of Beirut, Tripoli and other parts of the country witnessed different manifestations of protest. Lebanese people went to bed yesterday night not knowing what to expect in the morning, yet – and not surprisingly so – they woke up to yet another normal day of work, school, etc… Praise God! The Lebanese Army is very alert and on top of things, and we continue to get the sense that everyone is keen on maintaining security in the country. Again, we stand encouraged and hopeful.

In such days, listening to the news – whether local, regional or international – can be quite alarming especially that each news agency has its own agenda and affiliation. As I think of the state of panic that one can get into while switching from one channel to the other attempting to make sense of things, I am thankful that God is in control and focus on His promises and His word in Philippians 4:6 “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank Him for His answers.” Our country needs leaders after God’s heart. Difficult?! Not for God! We pray and await His intervention.

I believe that as Christians we are to hold on to His promises that we may not be overtaken by the sense of panic and confusion that disables us from doing the work that He has called us to do. May God give us wisdom to guide our countrywomen and men to put their trust in the Lord and not in human leaders – that they may have peace.

  • Please pray for the consultation process and outcome – that His will may be done.
  • Pray for the people of Lebanon – and the Lebanese Army.
  • Pray for the Body of Christ in our country – that we may not be distracted from doing the work that He has called us to do; that our lives – at all times – reflect the Source of our peace.

A glimpse of recent events at Luz y Verdad

Phil & Jami Covone:

For the last few months of our ministry, we have seen God at work all around us. At Luz y Verdad, families are experiencing salvation and baptism, and are growing in the faith. Some are taking on new roles; such as leading worship and teaching Bible studies.

Four people have followed Christ in baptism in the last three months. This is a big step for people who were traditionally raised to be baptized as infants. Please pray that God will continue to draw people to Himself and teach them about a relationship with Jesus, rather than a “religion”.

As church planters, we were trained by North American Mission Board to target the “unsaved, unchurched” in our community and to teach and lead them, until the Lord “added to our number”. Praise the Lord for the spiritual growth at Luz y Verdad!

We are amazed as God has shown us His work in Honduras, through Good Samaritan Baptist Mission. We had the privilege of traveling there in November, as Phil was asked to speak at five Good Samaritan Christian school graduations, including the Bible Institute. On our last night in San Marcos de Colon, Phil led a revival service for the Good Samaritan staff. We also visited several Feed the Hungry Kitchens and met many local church planters. We will lead a student mission team from Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy to this area in April 2011.

Celebrating Christ at Deer Creek

On Saturday, December 11, members from Eagle’s Landing First Baptist cooked a meal, complete with smoked turkey and all the fixings! They brought the food, tables, chairs and more to serve the people of Deer Creek Mobile Home Park. The kids loved the puppet show by the ELFBC student ministry! Luz y Verdad members helped serve and invited people to church.

A special thank you from Luz y Verdad: to Alan & Ming Richardson, along with Darren & Sarah Hughes and the many others for the hours of hard work and planning they put into this event!
